Abidjan's café and restaurant scene ranks among the densest in West Africa, making this large coastal city in Côte d'Ivoire a strong draw for eating and drinking well. The historic city centre holds a concentration of churches alongside the commercial energy of what remains the country's de facto political and economic capital, even after the official transfer of that status to Yamoussoukro in 1983. Several UNESCO World Heritage sites lie within the wider region.
