Acarigua

Founded as San Miguel de Acarigua in 1620, this Venezuelan city in the northern Llanos region is considered the country's breadbasket, with the surrounding plains producing rice, sugarcane, maize, sesame, and tomatoes on an industrial scale. The Acarigua River, a tributary of the Portuguesa, supports the region's agriculture. The city merges with neighbouring Araure to form a major commercial hub for the Llanos, and German conquistador Nicolás Federmann passed through the area as early as 1530 in search of El Dorado.
