Hot sulphur springs have drawn visitors to Acqui Terme since the Roman era, when the town was known as Aquae Statiellae, and a 19th-century pavilion called La Bollente still marks the central spring where water reaches near-boiling temperatures. Set in the Bormida valley in Piedmont's Alessandria province, the town is also one of the principal producers of Brachetto d'Acqui, a DOCG wine, and sits in a walkable centre with a real café and restaurant scene.
