Modest Jordanian town in the highlands of Karak Governorate, Adir traces its name either to the Roman emperor Hadrian — who opened the ancient Victory Road stretching from Bosra to the Red Sea — or to a Syriac word meaning "threshing floor." Human settlement here reaches back thousands of years, with pottery fragments, old wells, and ancient foundations still visible across the area. Today the town is home to a mixed Muslim and Christian community, noted for its tradition of religious coexistence.
