The Kiss River, which forms the natural border between Morocco and Algeria, runs alongside Ahfir, a town in the far northeast of Morocco's Berkane Province. Founded during the French protectorate era by Hubert Lyautey — who used it as a gateway for the 1907 French advance into Morocco — the town was then known as Martimprey-du-Kiss. Its Berber name, meaning "hole," refers either to the war trenches dug near the border or to a stone quarry worked during the protectorate period.
