Ahurei is the capital of Rapa and the Bass Islands of French Polynesia, and the southernmost permanently inhabited settlement where French is an official language. The town sits on both sides of the Baie d'Ahurei, with mountain terrain rising around the bay, and divides into a north and south side. Also written Ha'urei, it draws independent travellers to one of the most remote corners of the Pacific.
