Founded in 1706 at the foot of Pico do Papagaio in the rugged highlands of Minas Gerais, Aiuruoca is a modest Brazilian town with an unusual concentration of historic churches for its size. The municipality also holds a share of Serra do Papagaio State Park, established in 1998. A local point of culinary history: Danish immigrants settled in the surrounding countryside in the 1920s and laid the groundwork for queijo prato, one of Brazil's most widely eaten cheeses.
