Aizuwakamatsu
Aizuwakamatsu City · Japan
Aizuwakamatsu, the main city of the Aizu region in Fukushima Prefecture, carries a warrior history stretching back a thousand years, most vividly associated with the Byakkotai — a force of young samurai, aged thirteen to seventeen, nineteen of whom took their own lives rather than surrender during the Boshin Civil War. Sake brewing and lacquerware remain the city's principal industries today. The surrounding Aizu region offers mountain scenery, and nearby Mount Bandai and Lake Inawashiro draw visitors for skiing, fishing, and onsen.
