Designated a Pueblo Mágico for its colonial architecture — and the first town in Sonora to receive that title — Álamos is a small city in the foothills of the Sierra Madre Occidental whose wealth was built on silver mining from the late 17th century. It served briefly as a state capital in the late 1820s, hosts the annual Festival Cultural Alfonso Ortíz Tirado, and is home to the Alamos Alliance, a yearly economic summit sometimes called the "Little Mexican Davos." The town has been on UNESCO's World Heritage tentative list since 2001.
