This small Colorado city on the Rio Grande, Alamosa serves as the commercial hub of the San Luis Valley and the seat of Alamosa County. Founded in May 1878 by the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad, it grew quickly into a significant rail centre. Today it sits close to Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve, hosts Adams State University, and holds a summer river festival each June and a vintage car show over Labor Day weekend.
