Alsunga
Kurzeme · Latvia
Alsunga is a pocket-sized Latvian village in the Courland region known as the heartland of the Suiti, a Catholic community whose cultural traditions were added to the UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding in 2009 — an unusual enclave within predominantly Lutheran western Latvia. The village dates to at least 1230, and its Catholic identity traces to 1634, when local landowner Johan Ulrich von Schwerin invited Jesuits to convert his peasants after his own conversion to marry a Lithuanian noblewoman.
