A rural municipality in central Madagascar's Haute Matsiatra region, Ambohimahamasina sits close to Andringitra National Park, a UNESCO-listed protected area of mountain terrain. The commune's name translates roughly as "the hill that makes sacred," a reference to a local tradition involving a sterile orange tree that, according to local history, began bearing fruit when the mpanjaka kings settled here.
