Aného, also known as Petit-Popo, served twice as the capital of Togo — from 1886 to 1897 and again from 1914 to 1919 — and carries that layered history in a centre with many historic churches. Situated on Togo's Atlantic coast a short drive from Lomé, the town grew from a late 17th-century Portuguese trading post into a crossroads of migration and commerce, a role that shaped its diverse cultural character.
