Angels Camp
Calaveras County · United States
Mark Twain heard the tale that inspired "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County" at the Angels Hotel here in 1865, and Angels Camp has been trading on that story ever since — most visibly through its annual Jumping Frog Jubilee each May at the Calaveras County Fairgrounds. A California Historical Landmark, the small city was also a quartz mining hub through the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, with outlaws including Black Bart and Joaquin Murieta said to have passed through.
