Angol

Sitting beside the Vergara River at the foot of the Cordillera de Nahuelbuta in southern Chile's Araucanía Region, Angol is a town with a long and turbulent history: first established in 1553 as a Spanish fort during the Arauco War, it was destroyed and rebuilt multiple times before finally taking its current form during the Pacification of Araucania in the late 19th century. Its Mapuche name translates roughly as "crawling ascent."
