Arida, a coastal town in Wakayama Prefecture, is the origin of both the Arida mandarin orange and the mosquito coil — two products that spread from here across Japan. The Kumano Kodo pilgrimage road, a UNESCO World Heritage route, passes through the eastern part of the city, and the wider region holds further World Heritage sites. Mountains rise close to the town, which sits directly on the water.
