As Sallum
Egypt
This compact Mediterranean harbour town at Egypt's far northwestern edge, As Sallum sits directly on the sea below the escarpment known as the Aqaba al-Kabir, with the Libyan border just a few kilometres to the west. The town is primarily a Bedouin community of fishermen, merchants, and herdsmen, and holds a Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery from the Second World War. Halfaya Pass lies a short distance to the south, and the town's own pass serves as the main route ascending the coastal ridge.
