Ashikaga
Ashikaga City · Japan
Ashikaga, a city in Tochigi Prefecture on Japan's Honshu island, is home to the Ashikaga Gakko — a school that the 16th-century Jesuit missionary Francis Xavier called the "great university of the Bandō region" and that Luis Frois described as the only university in Japan at the time. The city also traces its history as the birthplace of the Ashikaga clan, descendants of the Seiwa Genji line, and sits close to mountains with a walkable centre of cafés and restaurants.
