Atuona

Paul Gauguin spent his final years in this pocket-sized village on the southern shore of Hiva Oa, French Polynesia, and is buried in Calvary Cemetery alongside the Belgian singer Jacques Brel. The Paul Gauguin Cultural Center, completed in 2003, commemorates his time here. A high peak rises sharply above the bay, and the village sits at the water's edge on one of the Marquesas Islands.
