Augusta Emerita
Badajoz · Spain
Founded in 25 BC by Emperor Augustus to settle veterans of the Cantabrian Wars, Augusta Emerita — today's Mérida — served as the capital of the Roman province of Lusitania and grew into one of the largest cities in Hispania. Its archaeological ensemble, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993, is among the most extensive in Spain, preserving remains of three aqueducts, two fora, and a city that once sat at the junction of major Roman roads near a crossing of the Guadiana river.
