Augusta, Georgia is best known internationally for hosting the Masters golf tournament each spring at Augusta National Golf Club, drawing over 200,000 visitors from around the world. Founded in 1736 and named for Princess Augusta of Saxe-Gotha, the city sits on the Savannah River and has a walkable centre with cafés, restaurants, and historic churches. Augusta served as a significant Confederate stronghold during the Civil War and was a popular Eastern resort destination in the early and mid-20th century.
