Avarua is the capital of the Cook Islands, set on the northern coast of Rarotonga — the country's largest and most visited island — with mountains rising behind the town and the harbour of Avatiu at its edge. The main international airport is here, making it the practical gateway to the Cook Islands, and the town serves as the commercial centre of the country.
