Badami
Bagalkot · India
Rock-cut cave temples carved into red sandstone cliffs made Badami the celebrated capital of the Badami Chalukya dynasty from 540 to 757, and the town in Karnataka's Bagalkot district remains defined by that heritage. The cave temples are complemented by structural temples including the Bhutanatha group, the Badami Shivalaya, and the Jambulingesvara Temple, all set around Agastya Lake at the foot of a rugged sandstone outcrop. The Indian government has designated Badami a heritage city under its HRIDAY scheme, and UNESCO World Heritage sites lie within the wider region.
