Baia de Aries
Romania
Small former gold-mining town in Alba County, Transylvania, Baia de Arieș sits on the Arieș River and traces its documented history to a 1325 charter of Charles I of Hungary. Mining for base metals, gold-bearing concentrates, and arsenopyrite defined the town until 2004. Visitors can seek out the "Emperor's beech," a protected monumental tree, and the Muncel Monastery, while the wider region is ringed by UNESCO World Heritage sites.
