This former gold and silver mining town in northern Romania's Maramureș County, with a history of mineral extraction documented since the Saxon colonization of the region around 1141 and attested under the name Mons Medius as early as 1329. The surrounding area offers scenic viewpoints and proximity to mountains, and the wider region is ringed by UNESCO World Heritage sites. Mining has largely ceased following restructuring of Romania's mining industry.
