Prefecture-level city in southeastern Jilin Province, Baishan sits in the heart of the Changbai Mountain region, with the Yalu River forming its southern border with North Korea and the Songhua River flowing through its northern reaches. The city's name — meaning "White Mountain" — reflects its position on the western flank of Changbai Mountain, whose Tianchi crater lake lies at the city's eastern edge.
