A compact town on the Usumacinta river in the Mexican state of Tabasco, Balancán de Domínguez holds an unusual concentration of churches for its size and sits directly on the water's edge. Founded in 1516 by Mayan settlers from several communities including Chakán Putum and Tayasal, it serves as the municipal seat of the Balancán municipality in the Los Ríos subregion.
