Ban Longcheng
Laos
During the Laotian Civil War, Long Tieng — also known as Ban Longcheng — functioned as a CIA-operated military base and Hmong Army stronghold so secretive it never appeared on maps, yet at its peak in the late 1960s it held a population that made it the second largest city in Laos. Today the area, in Xaisomboun Province, sits close to mountains and within reach of water, with a small central core of cafés and restaurants serving visitors drawn by its Cold War history.
