Banská Štiavnica
Slovakia
This UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993, Banská Štiavnica is a modest medieval mining town in central Slovakia set within the caldera of an ancient volcano, now the Štiavnica Mountains. Once a major centre for silver extraction, its 16th-century urban core survives largely intact, with an unusual concentration of churches, a strong café scene for its size, and vineyards in the surrounding hills.
