Gateway town to the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, Barreirinhas sits on the Rio Preguiças in the northeastern Brazilian state of Maranhão and serves as the main departure point for visits to the park's vast dune-and-lagoon landscape. The town centre has a concentration of cafés and restaurants along the waterfront, and the wider municipality falls within a large environmental protection area established in 1992.
