Basavilbaso

Uruguay · Argentina

One of Argentina's earliest Jewish agricultural settlements, Basavilbaso in Entre Ríos province traces its origins to Russian Jewish immigrants — many from Ukraine and Bessarabia — who arrived in the late 19th century and went on to establish the first agricultural cooperative in South America. The town itself grew from a railway stop, with the first train arriving on 30 June 1887. Yiddish troubadour Jevel Katz later immortalised it in song. Locals still call it Basso, a nickname inherited from old railway luggage tags.
