Widely regarded as the wine capital of Burgundy, Beaune is a walled town in eastern France whose historic centre holds the cellars and facilities of wine producers large and tiny — a tradition stretching back to Roman times. The 15th-century Hospices de Beaune, one of Europe's best-preserved Renaissance buildings, hosts France's primary annual wine auction. The town's historic centre was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2015 as part of the Climats, terroirs of Burgundy site, and the surrounding villages — Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet — rank among the world's most celebrated wine appellations.
