Bhaktapur
Nepal
Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979, Bhaktapur is a densely settled medieval Newar city in the eastern Kathmandu Valley, a short distance from the capital. The five-tiered Nyatapola pagoda, completed in 1702, and the former royal palace anchor its historic centre. The city is known for over 200 forms of traditional dance, the spring festival of Biskā jātrā, the carnival of Sāpāru, pottery and handicraft traditions, and jūjū dhau — a buffalo-milk yogurt considered a local speciality. Bhaktapur served as capital of the Malla Kingdom from the 12th century until 1482.
