Biała Podlaska
Poland
This former residential city of the powerful Radziwiłł magnate family, Biała Podlaska preserves their Palace and Park ensemble alongside Renaissance and Baroque churches in a walkable centre with a good spread of cafés and restaurants. The city on the Krzna river in eastern Poland is also the birthplace of virtuoso violinist George Bridgetower and schooled the prolific 19th-century writer Józef Ignacy Kraszewski at one of Poland's oldest high schools.
