Biertan's fortified church, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993, was the seat of the Evangelical Lutheran Bishop in Transylvania for nearly three centuries, making this tiny Saxon village in Sibiu County one of the most significant of its kind in the region. The commune's two other villages, Copșa Mare and Richiș, each have their own fortified church, and all three are linked by the Via Transilvanica long-distance trail, with vineyards in the surrounding countryside.
