Birjand, the provincial capital of South Khorasan in eastern Iran, is known for exports of saffron, barberry, jujube, and handmade carpets. The Akbarieh Garden within the city was inscribed as part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing of Persian Gardens in 2011. The city also claims to have been the first in Iran to install a municipal water-pipe system, predating Tehran, and the Shawkatiyeh School was the country's second modern-style educational institution after Tehran's Dar al-Fonun.
