Bjelovar
Croatia
Founded in 1756 by decree of Empress Maria Theresa, Bjelovar is one of Croatia's youngest cities, laid out on a planned grid with a regular square street pattern still visible in the centre today. The city has a long tradition of dairy and cheese production — sometimes called "the city of cheese" — and its walkable centre holds a concentration of historic churches alongside a lively food-and-drink scene, with vineyards in the surrounding area.
