This waterfront town on Nicaragua's central Caribbean coast, Bluefields carries a layered history as the former capital of the Kingdom of Mosquitia, which maintained independence and later protectorate status under Great Britain from the 17th through the 19th centuries. Today it serves as capital of the South Caribbean Coast Autonomous Region, with a walkable centre offering cafés, restaurants, and historic churches along the water's edge.
