This modest fishing town on the eastern shore of Sherbro Island sits on the Sherbro River estuary in southern Sierra Leone, within easy reach of the water that defines its daily life. Once a significant colonial-era trading hub for piassava and other agricultural goods, Bonthe is now a quiet municipality — the smallest of Sierra Leone's six — where fishing remains the main industry and Krio serves as the common tongue among its ethnically diverse population.
