Boorama, the capital of Somaliland's Awdal region in the country's west, is known as the educational heart of the Somali people, home to numerous schools, colleges, and universities — including Amoud University, the largest in Somalia at the time of its founding. The city sits in highland terrain close to the Ethiopian and Djiboutian borders, making it cooler than much of the region. It was also the site where northern Somali clan reconciliation agreements were reached after the 1991 civil war.
