A Dorset village with a heritage-dense centre and a notable royal footnote: King Charles II spent the night here on 23 September 1651 during his flight after the Battle of Worcester. The parish church has origins in the 12th and 13th centuries, and the clergyman Thomas Fuller preached here between 1634 and 1650. Archaeological finds in the surrounding area span from Palaeolithic hand axes to a Roman fort at nearby Waddon Hill.
