Bytów
Poland
14th-century Teutonic Knights castle is the centrepiece of this compact town in Poland's Gdańsk Pomerania region, set on a lake and two rivers in the Bytów Lake District. The town received its charter from the Teutonic Order in 1346, changed hands repeatedly during the Thirteen Years' War, and later passed through Prussian and German rule before returning to Poland after World War II. Cafés and restaurants are concentrated in the centre, and the waterside setting gives it a strong visual character.
