Cabimas

The 1922 blowout of the Barroso No. 2 well in Cabimas marked the moment Venezuela became a major oil-producing nation, and this lakeside city on the eastern shore of Lake Maracaibo has remained central to that industry ever since. One of the largest cities in Zulia State, it sits within the zone of Venezuela's most productive oil fields, which extend beneath the lake itself.
