Calcata
Viterbo · Italy
After the Italian government condemned its volcanic-cliff foundations in the 1930s and residents relocated, Calcata's medieval stone centre was left empty — until artists and squatters began moving in during the 1960s. The historic quarter, overlooking the Treja river valley north of Rome, has since become a modest artistic community of galleries, cafés, and restaurants, drawing weekend visitors from the capital. Several historic churches serve a village of only a few hundred permanent residents.
