This seaport city on the Dardanelles with a walkable, café-lined waterfront, Çanakkale is the main base for visits to the ruins of ancient Troy and the First World War cemeteries at Gallipoli. The city sees its heaviest crowds around 18 March and 25 April (Anzac Day), when commemorations draw visitors from across the world. A large university gives the centre a lively atmosphere year-round, and the wooden horse from the 2004 film Troy stands on the waterfront as a curiosity.
