Slovenia's third-largest city, Celje sits at the confluence of several rivers in the lower Savinja Valley, with a walkable centre full of cafés and mountain views in the surrounding terrain. Its most prominent landmark is Upper Celje Castle, first recorded in 1322 as the seat of the Counts of Celje — the most influential noble family in the region — whose three gold stars on a blue shield now form part of the Slovenian national coat of arms.
