With more than 400 timber-framed houses packed into a walkable Altstadt on the banks of the river Aller, Celle is one of the most photographed towns on the German Timber-Frame Road. The Renaissance and Baroque Schloss Celle anchors the centre, which holds several historic churches alongside a dense food-and-drink scene. The town served as the ducal residence of the Lüneburg branch of the House of Welf from 1378 to 1705, and sits at the southern edge of the Lüneburg Heath in Lower Saxony.
