Chachapoyas
Peru
Founded in 1538 as San Juan de la Frontera de los Chachapoyas, this highland city in northern Peru sits on the eastern slopes of the Andes in the Utcubamba river basin. Its historic centre, declared a national cultural heritage site in 1988, is known for its colonial mansions with interior courtyards and gardens, and churches built in a local "chachapoyano" style. The walkable centre has a solid café and restaurant scene, and the surrounding mountains and river valley make it a base for exploring the wider Amazonas region.
