Chalcis
Εύβοια · Greece
The tidal strait of Euripus, which reverses direction roughly every six hours with a brief pause between each turn, runs directly through Chalcis, the main city of the Greek island of Euboea. A bridge crosses the strait at its narrowest point, and an Ottoman castle overlooks the town from the mainland hill of Karababa. The walkable centre has a dense food-and-drink scene and a concentration of historic churches, and the city served as a Venetian fortress — known as Negroponte — through much of the Middle Ages.
