Sitting at the confluence of the Jinsha, Lancang, and Nu rivers in eastern Tibet, Chamdo is a large city traditionally known as the "Pearl of Eastern Tibet" and the historic gateway to the region from the east. Set within the Hengduan Mountains, it serves as the political, economic, and cultural centre of eastern Tibet, a role it has held since the late Qing dynasty. Scenic mountain viewpoints surround the city on all sides.
